One find day I found myself in an unfamiliar bar filled with unfamiliar faces. I think I was supposed to meet a buddy, but he never showed. I should have left but they had a pool table and I saw a large man taking down weaker players with a cocky swagger that just dared me to challenge him. It was a close match coming down to the final ball and I made Giuseppe Zanotti New Collection
I thought of my dad when I saw that horrible video of the motorcycle gang surrounding the SUV in New York City. People have strong opinions on who is to blame for what happened that day. Some put 100 percent of the fault on the bullies on the motorcycles. Others say the SUV driver is a criminal because he overreacted and drove over some of the riders in making his escape.

When I turned 18, the drinking age was still 18 so I was free to walk into any bar I wanted and have a beer. Long before I ever tasted a Genesee Cream Ale, my father, who was always smarter than I ever gave him credit for, taught me many life lessons. Some stuck, others rolled off like the morning mist, so I was left to learn the truth the hard way. One of his favorite sayings was, "If you go looking for trouble, eventually you'll find it." I thought he was being a bit dramatic so I'd roll my eyes and find the quickest way out of the room. Which takes me back to turning 18 and a trip to a South Troy bar.
Wishing I had listened more
There was a pub named "Apps" in the center of my neighborhood where the locals would hang out, play Molly Hatchet on the jukebox and shoot pool. I was good at pool because years earlier my parents had gotten my brothers and me a pool table for Christmas. I'd shoot pool in Apps, usually with my brothers or friends, and a decent amount of "busting chops" came standard with every game. What's the point of beating someone if you can't make fun of them right?
taking over Manhattan once a year with their motorcycles. It is mostly harmless pranks but they do put people at risk, and they spread a fair amount of terror in the name of fun. Did one of them deserve to get crushed by a 5,000 pound SUV? Of course not. I'm sure the man behind the wheel, even after being beaten in front of his wife and child, would tell you he wishes he could take that part back. But there is my father's voice in my head again as I watch that video. Those young men on motorcycles went looking for trouble and eventually they found it. Still I'm sorry for everyone who was injured; that's a hard lesson to take.
I refuse to stop in convenience stores late at night because that's when they usually get robbed. And to quote an old song by Kenny Rogers, I walk away from trouble when I can, even if I think I have the high moral ground.
a very difficult bank shot to beat him. It was a thing of beauty. He enjoyed mocking the guys he had beaten so I threw a snide comment his way to see how he liked it. He didn't.

His eyes turned dark and he gripped the pool stick so tight his knuckles went white. I won't tell you what he said to me because it's not suitable for print but I quickly realized I was surrounded by strangers and about to take a beating. Out of the dark corner of the bar I heard a voice say, "Hey John, we have a problem here?" It was a friend of my older brother, quite menacing in his own way, stepping in to pull my bacon out of the fire. The guy with the pool cue thought better of shutting my smart mouth and walked away. That night when I got home, I was telling my brothers the story and my father just shook his head. "You went looking for trouble and while you may not have deserved what could have happened, you certainly did ask for it. I hope you learned your lesson."
My days of hustling beers over a pool table are long behind me. Nowadays the only thing I knock around are words on the blank page. Still I wish I'd listened to my father more when I was a lad because, as we all learn soon enough, real life doesn't come with spell check.
