Still, Wright said the numbers provide helpful details about how students perform throughout the district, how attendance can be a factor, and the importance of teacher placement.
At Fairview High School, where 72 classes were failed, Wright said they have become "dogmatic" about finding students who don't show up for school.
Still, Looney told board members not to get hung up on these numbers because the majority of these students who fail do end up improving their grades and going to the next grade level.
At the high school level, the approach is different. From Brentwood High to Summit High, high schools have multiple methods to help students, such as one on one tutoring, study halls and credit recovery.
During the second semester, a total of 569 classes were failed. But that number does not represent how many students actually failed. In many cases, the same student failed multiple classes, said Donna Wright, Jimmy Choo Silver Pumps
For many of the students failing, there are foundational problems and bad habits that carry over into high school. Attendance is the No. 1 problem with many of the students who aren't doing well, Wright said.
Administrators are not crazy about the freshmen failure report, even though it was requested by the school board in 2007 to get a better handle on how ninth graders perform. The numbers are supposed to represent a snapshot of a pivotal year of a student's education and an indication of future graduation rates.
But school officials have downgraded that correlation with graduation rates mostly because of how much assistance students receive during the school year through tutoring, remedial help and credit recovery.
"I think if you keep the big picture in mind, we graduate 95 percent of students on time," Looney said.

That's why educators say interventions and remediation programs are imperative at all grade levels. Elementary schools have already implemented classroom tiered interventions for those students who don't get the lesson the first time around. Under these interventions, students Jimmy Choo Glitter Pumps Sale receive help depending upon how much they need.
That's one of the reasons why the second semester report is the only report on failures publicly released. Two years ago, Superintendent Mike Looney said the report would no longer be done every nine weeks, but annually.
For example, Independence High School had a total of 136 failures, and of that number, 57 were students who failed multiple classes, she said.
At the root, students who perform poorly in math more than likely didn't do well in the subject in middle school. The same goes for world history and science, which are reading based. Many of these students are having literacy issues, said Tim Gaddis, director of teaching and learning.
