The Right Rev. Claude and Barbara Payne have moved back to Abilene from Houston upon his retirement as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas. He also had offices in Austin and Tyler and was as busy as it sounds.

He is a native of West Texas and served United Methodist Churches in Amarillo, SanAntonio and Corpus Christi. After his election as bishop, he presided over the Oklahoma Conference and the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference.
He is the son of the late Vic and Katherine Payne; his grandmother Elizabeth Payne was the sister of Claude Gill, for whom he was named. Gill was the founder of theAbilene Savings Association.
