Uhlenhopp ran south into a parking lot clogged with construction equipment and materials for a new school being built in the aftermath of a devastating tornado a year earlier. He hid behind a pallet, unsure of what to do next.
"He went back to his car, and it looked like he grabbed something from the cup holder and put it in his pocket," he said.

"Being from a small town, that's just what we do," said Uhlenhopp, who will be a sophomore this fall at Iowa State. "You open doors for people."
Other students fled the building amid screams, scrambling north. Becker walked out and calmly headed south toward his car in Uhlenhopp's direction.
Uhlenhopp, a freshman, had finished his workout and walked just steps outside to call his mother for a ride. Becker walked Giuseppe Zanotti 3 Strap Sandal up, and Uhlenhopp considered, for a brief second, opening the door before continuing with the conversation.
That sound, the one from mere feet away that changed a small Iowa town forever, is gone erased by time.
As the horrific reality of what was unfolding around him almost five years ago began to register, Uhlenhopp soaked up those details even as he ran his feet and path guided by instinct.
A blood chilling thought arose. What if Becker saw him and thought he was calling police? He shoved the phone in a bag slung over his shoulder.
"I looked up to the bus barn roof, and the sun was shining off it and I could hear birds chirping," he said.
"I didn't think anything of it," he said.

Once outside, Uhlenhopp again noticed Becker later telling a Division of Criminal Investigation agent that Becker was wearing a full body work jumpsuit, "like a mechanic."
Uhlenhopp hears something much more ordinary.
Soon, Uhlenhopp found himself rewinding other events.
